THE ANGELS are touring Australia right now with ALL the original members : Chris Bailey (bass), Buzz Bidstrup (drums), John and Rick Brewster (guitars) and Doc Neeson (vocals).

I recorded that interview with Buzz in May and we spoke about many things (it was such a long time !!) : from the Aussie Rock Celebration Concert – Unveiling the Statue of Bon Scott 2008, to the Sorry Day, the Jimmy Little Foundation, the arrival of a new government in Australia, the long way to reunite the Angels again, the new release of « Face to face » for the tour, the performances’ concept (we even spoke about Ed Kuepper !!), the ideas to play oversea and…Marseille !!
I played a lot of famous songs excerpts to illustrate this friendly conversation : « I can’t shake it, Waiting for the world, No exit, Out of the blues, Long Line, Marseille !!

If you want to hear and read my first connection with the Angels, check my first true podcast in March 2005 with Buzz’s first e-mail who reacted on Meltingpod !!! This podcast was in fact just a joke to reply to my friend Michael Butler who lauched the Rock and Roll Geek Show from San Francisco a few months before…who knew at that moment (where I couldn’t say one word in English !!) it could lead me to such a long trip…:)
I ranged in the category section of this blog under « the Angels (aka Angels city) all my reviews or podcasts about or with the Angels’ interviews or songs for more than three years now.

Great Live performance at Paris June 30th from ROSE TATTOO IN EUROPEAN TOUR !! The venue was not big but the audience was very hot !

I filmed Ed Kuepper during some moments of his show at l’Olympia at Paris with my usual camera using the « video » option without a lot of expectations for the sound quality but the result is not too bad…anyway it’s surely (or one of ??) the unique recording from this nice performance with two members of the Bad Seeds who joined Ed and his drummer Jeffrey Wegener to improvise together around « Eternally yours » : Warren Ellis added his violin (like on the Jean-Lee album) and Martyn P. Casey his bass.

On another side it signed at least my entrance in youtube as a video producer !!! the first Meltingvideopod I launched years ago as a test (November 3rd 2005) with the Streetwalkin’cheetahs was a promotion for that band I like but not my own production (no recorder fot that)…so enjoy this new and first experience and support Meltingworlds by Paypal if you want me buying a true videocamera for a best result next time !!…:)

I start this podcast with ED KUEPPER opening his show at l’Olympia June 9th at Paris with one my favorite song « the way I made you feel »!!

That concert closed his 3 weeks long european tour with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds with some great moments : Martyn P. Casey and Warren Ellis (the violonist and bass guitarist from the Bad Seeds) joined Ed and Jeffrey on stage for an unforgettable version from Eternally yours (videos clips soon : stay connected !!).; at the end of Nick Cave’ s show Ed and Jeffrey joined the Bad Seeds…Paris was lucky and me too !!

 
For the last song a big jam : Ed Kuepper, Warren Ellis (violin) and Nick Cave (back on the piano); the three drummers together : Thomas Wydler, Jeffrey Wegener and Jim Sclavunos !!

We continued the interview (part 3) in a very quiet, peaceful and intimate garden with flowers we found out walking in the Tiergarten at Berlin without a precise idea of the North…in fact a place for confidences and Ed spoke about his temporary blockage to write any song or play live after producing 12 (or 15 ?) albums between 1990 and 1997 , how he started again and his new approach of the music now !!

In that podcast I played « Horse under water » recorded during the show at the Tempodrom, « Rainy night » and Everything I got belongs to you » recorded during the soundcheck at l’Olympia…Ed tested all the time new versions with Jeffrey and it’s really an endless pleasure…:)

There will be a part 4 proposing a new interview recorded with Ed at l’Olympia and my friend Eric Tessier who hosts the bi-weekly rock show « Place aux fous musique » from Radio Libertaire, a national French radio spread by the Anarchist Federation (simultaneously translated in French); the podcast will be published after he will air the show July 25th…here I just played an extract with some great news about Ed’s projects for the second part of 2008 !! We couldn’t wait to share that with you !!

We continue the interview with ED KUEPPER in the Tiergarten at Berlin speaking about his musical evolution, how he experimented different line-ups and instruments to approach and satisfy his idea of the sound… from the « first » Saints to the Laughing Clowns and more…I start with playing excerpts from « Honey Steels’ Gold » recorded during the show, « If I had a ticket » (a cover from Phil Jones and the unknown blues) and « Horse under water » at the end (the whole song with Ed’s agreement) recorded at the soundcheck : the empty Tempodrom at that time sounded as a cathedral…a great moment for me and I hope for you too !!

At least I met ED KUEPPER in person at Berlin and he offered me the possibility to record his both soundchecks and live shows May 21th and 22th…alone with him, his drummer Jeffrey Wegener and the sound engineer in the Tempodrom the biggest venue at Berlin and a few hours later packed with 3500 people : I really loved the intimacy of the soundchecks but the shows were very exciting too and good !!!

The second day in the afternoon I recorded one hour interview with Ed Kuepper in the Tiergarten a wonderful park in the middle of Berlin : my idea was to approach his musical evolution during 35 years.
In this podcast part one we started at Brême-Germany where Ed was born, then his childhood in Australia and his beginning with the « second band » : « Kid Galahad and the Eternals aka the Saints »…be patient : a small ridiculous little wind wasted the five first minutes of the recording but fortunately I detected it. I illustrate the interview with some of my live recordings at the soundcheck with : « When I first came to this land, Rainy night, Honey steel’s gold, The way I made you feel » + an unexpected cover from Skip James « Cypress Grove Blues » by Ed and Jeffrey + a cover I chose from the Troggs « I want you » by the Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs featuring Wayne Kramer to illustrate Ed’s talk about this first song they played with Chris and Ivor at their high school party…+ a short interview with Jeffrey at the end recorded after the second show : he even sang me a song…:)

Doc Neeson in that interview part 2 spoke about his life experience after his car accident, his way to recover the energy to jump on stage again, his attitude as a frontman not far away from a chaman…

a true pleasure to hear his voice giving all the time a very sincere point of view as a musician and as a human person. I don’t know if my voice is seductive but his voice is terribly addictive…:)
I played a lot of live extracts recorded in 1980 at Paris and in Australia with the Angels’ original members : Chris Bailey, Buzz Bidstrup, Doc Neeson, Rick and John Brewster…at least REUNITED !!

At least Doc Neeson gave me an interview for Meltingpod !! He was the last original Angels I was expecting for more than three years now to complete « my family » (thanks to Buzz Bidstrup who made that connection possible !!!).

The news are great : The Angels (aka Angels city) finally fixed their legal problems with names, companies and…reunited for the fans’ pleasure and I can imagine for their own pleasure too !
Doc announced the Angels’ next Australian tour in July 2008, maybe an European tour in 2009, tried to comfort me right now alone at Marseille singing « a capella » a song for me, looking for a way with me to find money with Meltingpod and be able to join quickly the Angels in Australia…an incredible phone meeting placed under the sign « high seduction » but very friendly and warm-hearted too !
We spoke more than 1,5 hour with Doc so I will publish the podcast in two parts. Enjoy the first one !

Great news : Ed Kuepper and his drummer Jeffrey Wegener are Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds‘ special guests for a fantastic European tour around almost all the capitals, starting for Ed at Oslo May 16th to finish June 9th at…Paris !!!

As always Ed is very precise and sincere to answer to my questions and he develops his « romantic » concept about his live performances…Warning ! you could become addict and book all of his shows !
I played « My best interest at heart », « When I first came to this land » and « Flypaper »…A friend’s advice if you want to know more about Ed, order his both compilations (49 songs exactly each time !!) : « The Magic Mile » (Ed Kuepper) or « Cruel but Fair » (the Laughing Clowns).
Ed sent me unreleased versions from « the Laughing Clowns » and « Eternally yours » to give you an idea of his duo guitar-vocals and drums with Jeffrey…a big pleasure in perspective if you can catch a show near your town :

BTW : I didn’t completly recover ( I still was too bad to see Nick Cave’ show at Marseille April 26h !!) but I hope to be able to meet Ed Kuepper somewhere in Europe…:)
If this website is still alive (my server Free cut my account because of a violent spammers’ attack during my sickness) it’s thanks to some of my friends who answered present and saved my database, updated my WordPress version like Markus from Berlin, the French podcasters like Luc Saint-Elie from Paris (the first French male podcaster who helped me the first French female podcaster to start her blog in 2005 !!) and Alain Thomas from Bordeaux (Palmipode).
Thanks to you three and thanks to all my listeners who regularly (sometimes daily !!) sent me messages of love during these bad last two months : it was very very precious to avoid to give up !!
But working on a computer stays very painful for my neck and arm and I think I will publish just a few podcasts this year with the most important interviews for me or « quick and easy made » with music only…so stay connected !

A lot of people surely thought the same thing than Bernie since that day of February 19th 1980 where Bon Scott died alone abandoned unconscious in a car during a very freezing night in London, far away from home.
I know it gave the energy to my friend Buzz Bidstrup to organize as artistic director this big event the Aussie Rockers Saluting Bon Scott at Fremantle (where Bon is burried) reuniting a lot of Bon’s friends and fans for a concert last year and raising the money to erect a statue to Bon there. In a few days February 24th they will unveil the statue and will give a second show around « him » ! More details about the line-up HERE !
A new interview will be recorded with Buzz…soon !
I specially dedicate these pics taken at the Trust’s show at Istres last December to Arnaud « Bon Scott Rawpower » (Bon Scott Ultimate Fan from North of France…:) who devoted a big part of his time to honor Bon’s memory and share his passion for AC/DC with Ben in this fantastic website : Back in Black and their new webzine Can’t stop AC/DC.

A great emotion to hear that solemn talk at the Australian Parliament from France !! It’s maybe and surely the first time in the world I guess, a nation apologizes for the damages caused to the indigenous who lived in their country before they arrived as…colonialists !! A lot of countries in the world including France caused the same damages in the past even with having the sincere feeling they only brought their best : their greatest civilization !! I feel me proud for all my friends in Australia who helped that day to come : a great day for the Aborigines for Australia and for the whole planet ! and the first step for a big change in our society I hope !

A GREAT RECONCILIATION DAY BETWEEN THE CULTURES FOR AUSTRALIA !!!
Mr Kevin Rudd will become the first Prime Minister to bridge the gap between the black and white communities in Australia accepting the responsibility for the forced removal of aboriginal children from their parents and will say sorry in behaf of the whole nation to the indigeneous families tomorrow : a historic day for Australia. BRAVO !!!!! Today was already a great day with a traditional welcome to country by Indigenous elders which has been held in federal Parliament for the first time !!
